The effect of patient quality measurements and HCAHPS patient satisfaction on hospital reimbursements

BACKGROUND: The Centers of Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) links hospital reimbursements to quality metrics. Likewise, the Hospital Value-Based Purchasing (VBP) program offers financial incentives acute-care hospitals based on performance improvements several measures included in national Consumer Assessment Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey. A research gap exists with regard assessing effectiveness VBP improving patient’s care. OBJECTIVE: This study is determine whether which reported better patient metrics lower frequency pressure sores received higher reimbursements. METHODS: data were retrieved from CMS Care Compare website utilizing matched 2297 US hospitals. Information HCAHPS, Program Patient Safety Index, Reimbursements was obtained for this study. Partial Least Square (PLS) utilized thru SmartPLS 3.0 test hypotheses. RESULTS: results did not reveal any penalties when outcomes increased numbers sores. However, associated satisfaction. Controversially, satisfaction scores reimbursement rates overall. CONCLUSIONS: main contribution reveals that value-based concept continuous improvement constrained due lack unified measurement objectives across healthcare institutions.
